Due to recent rainfall, it is important to know that the Little Sioux River has crested at 17.39 feet and is falling. However, due to the predicted additional rainfall on Saturday, we are asking the public to remain diligent. We are not out of the woods, but are guardedly optimistic that the river level will continue to drop. We are working closely with our partners across the county and state to monitor the situation.

The Spencer Police Department would like to remind the public that the use of “First-Class Consumer Fireworks” within the corporate city limits of Spencer is prohibited. Although you can legally purchase the fireworks in Spencer, you cannot use them within the city limits. A violation is a simple misdemeanor (ordinance 6-8-B2) punishable by a fine of not less than $250. When you include court costs and surcharge a conviction will cost a minimum of $397.50. Please celebrate responsibly!

Government Information

Spencer City Hall is located at 418 2nd Avenue West and is the central administrative office of the City of Spencer.

The Offices located at City Hall include: Office of the Mayor, Office of the City Manager, City Clerk's Office, Public Works Department and Planning Department. The Spencer Council Chambers are located at the North end of the building with a separate entrance at 420 2nd Avenue West. At the north end of City Hall is the office of the Spencer Main Street Company. The entrance to this office is located at 122 West 5th Street.

There are a variety of public services available at City Hall:

  • City records: Council minutes, resolutions and ordinances
  • City cemetery services: Riverside and North Lawn cemeteries
  • City payroll, personnel and bookkeeping
  • Garbage and solid waste services
  • Street and sewer maintenance
  • Various permits and licenses: Building, sign, fence, sidewalk, electrical, plumbing, excavation, Spencer beer and liquor licenses

City Hall is also the central office for the following Boards and Commissions:
