The NW IA Regional Airport
opened in 1942. The facility was operated by the Hunter Flying Club to
train glider pilots. The orange hangar and beacon are from that
time. The original site was 200 acres. Today 886 acres. 38.5
acres of this are paved. Buildings make up 2 acres. The remaining
560 acres is farm land.
The airport is located atop a
northwest-southeast ridge 3.5 miles NW of Spencer, IA located in located
in scenic Northwest Iowa. Okoboji and the Iowa Great Lakes are a short 15
miles and only a 90 mile trip to Sioux Falls. Avoid ATC delays at
Sioux Falls by stopping in at NW IA Regional Airport.
Runway 12-30 is 100' x
6000'. Runway 18-36 is 75' x 5100'. Both runways are concrete
grooved and are lit by remote 3 intensity lighting system. Private aircraft from ultralights to high performance jets
use the airport. There is an ILS on Runway 12.
