History

The NW IA Regional Airport opened in 1942.  The facility was operated by the Hunter Flying Club to train glider pilots.  The orange hangar and beacon are from that time.  The original site was 200 acres.  Today 886 acres.  38.5 acres of this are paved.  Buildings make up 2 acres.  The remaining 560 acres is farm land.

Location

The airport is located atop a northwest-southeast ridge 3.5 miles NW of Spencer, IA  located in located in scenic Northwest Iowa.  Okoboji and the Iowa Great Lakes are a short 15 miles and only a 90 mile trip to Sioux Falls.  Avoid ATC delays at Sioux Falls by stopping in at NW IA Regional Airport.

Runway info

Runway 12-30 is 100' x 6000'.  Runway 18-36 is 75' x 5100'.  Both runways are concrete grooved and are lit by remote 3 intensity lighting system.  Private aircraft from ultralights to high performance jets use the airport.  There is an ILS on Runway 12.
